What’s in a name?

When it comes to naming a business, for some it’s easy and comes naturally. I didn’t find the process of naming Petal Muse easy or natural. I spent months and many lists of possible contenders written on anything, including the palm of my hand. How could I come up with a name that would encapsulate all that I do and want to convey? I’m a flower farmer but didn’t want to name it after my farm, Dos Limones (Spanish for two lemons), because even though I love everything lemon, the name “lemon” always reminds me of something broken. I had to really sit with my “why”. Why farm flowers? Why create with flowers? Why choose this avenue to spread joy? And it was this process that made me realize that flowers were my muse. Back in the 1300’s when muse was first recorded, it’s definition was “to be astonished”. Yep, that’s me, thoroughly astonished by flowers. Their colors, their delicate romantic petals, the way they dance in a breeze, the way they attract bees. Muse also means to reflect, usually in silence. I often find myself in this quiet reflection while arranging florals. I am my most creative when foraging and choosing flowers for an arrangement, I can’t help but focus my thoughts on them. It’s focused daydreaming at it’s best so Petal Muse was born.
